Tucked away in Ferguslie Park, Paisley, Tannahill Estate has been a cornerstone of the local community for decades. Once a vibrant area, its streets and buildings hold the memories of countless lives. But now, as demolition teams move in, the estate is on the brink of significant change.
Recently, I had the chance to take a walk through the estate, exploring its streets and stepping inside some of the remaining buildings. Tannahill Road, once bustling with activity, now feels eerily still. The derelict houses, with their broken windows and crumbling walls by vandalism and many set alight due to being emptied for months as lengthy process has to be followed before demolition contractor arrived on site, tell silent stories of the families who once lived here. Pockets of land have already been flattened, leaving open spaces where homes and lives once thrived.
The council’s demolition plans have left many locals with mixed emotions. Even those who owned their homes were not spared, with some being forced to sell through compulsory purchase orders. Many homeowners resisted, unwilling to accept the low offers made by the council, but ultimately had no choice.
One local resident didn’t hold back when sharing their feelings about the changes:
"I’m devastated for the buildings to be pulled down. In all my life staying in Tannahill Terrace, there’s never been an issue with the buildings. The council should be ashamed of themselves for wasting these beautiful structures at the heart of the community. The question remains, who is after this land ? How could these buildings not be restored, especially when the infrastructure is in good condition ?"
Demolition works are being carried out by Caskie Demolition, who are clearing the site to pave the way for redevelopment. As the landscape changes, many in the community are left wondering what will come next and whether the area’s history and significance will be respected in the process.
Walking through Tannahill Estate, it’s impossible not to feel the weight of its history. The laughter, the struggles, the everyday lives and lingering in the quiet streets. The buildings may soon be gone, but the spirit of Tannahill remains strong.
Though the estate is transforming, the story of Tannahill Estate isn’t just about the past. It’s about the fight for its future.
