The alarm was raised around 6:00am at the Viridor operated site on Middleton Road, Linwood. Plumes of smoke were seen rising over the facility, which serves as a vital hub for processing waste before it is sent for recycling or disposal.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) launched a large scale operation, dispatching six fire engines along with multiple specialist units to battle the flames.

Crews worked through the early hours to contain the blaze, which was located within the main transfer station. Firefighters have now successfully contained the incident but remain on site as a precaution to damp down the area and monitor for any potential resignation.

A spokesperson for Viridor confirmed that all staff were safe, stating: “This morning, a fire was reported at Linwood Transfer Station. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is currently onsite and has the fire contained. All colleagues are safe and accounted for".

The spokesperson added: "The council run Household Waste Recycling Centre next door to the site will be closed today as a precaution. At this time, there are no further details available as to the cause of the fire".
